Unfortunately, they were fresh out of clip art featuring a redhead typing away on her laptop while rocking bedhead, a Lanz flannel nightie, and huge socks
Once upon a time, a certain woman who’s much too old to keep doing this stuff decided she could spend most of Saturday sitting in forty-degree weather at Husky Stadium after being caught in a torrential downpour. Let’s just say it didn’t end well. As a result, I visited my doctor yesterday, and I’d like to welcome him to The Little Pink Clubhouse. He’s one of the people I’m thankful for, so it’s good I’m writing about all this today. In the meantime, I’ll be much better by tomorrow.
When I reflect on the past year, there are so many things I look back on and smile over, and I have to mention the Gabbly People. Hundreds of thousands of people spent the first few months of this year following the gavel-to-gavel liveblogging of the Libby trial at www.firedoglake.com (it’s all in the archives if you’d like to take a peek!). In some effort to minimize the effect on FDL’s servers, some of those who wanted to chat or make comments during the coverage each day were encouraged to go to Gabbly. Gabbly is a Web-based chat client that runs over any website. It’s fairly addictive.
Of course, while we waited for a verdict, we started talking amongst ourselves. Slowly but surely, we got to know each other. The same people showed up every day. After awhile, others drifted back to their normal lives, but we all kept talking. To say that the group that remained is a cross-section is an understatement. We come from every area of the country, every walk of life, every background, and range in age from twentysomething to sixtysomething. You’d think we’d have nothing in common besides politics. Obviously, there are things we disagree on, just like any other social group. At the same time, this small group of people I’ve never met in the flesh is so important to me. Even if I can only spend fifteen minutes catching up and finding out what’s new, I’m happy.
I’ll be attending a conference in San Francisco in July; I’m looking forward to meeting at least one of our number for lunch. I hope I’ll meet more. They make me laugh, they make me think, and we celebrate each other’s triumphs and mourn each other’s losses. One of us got married earlier this week. We look forward to business opportunities and family celebrations and the little things that make up the lives of adults everywhere. Most of all, I can call them friends.
When I sit down to dinner tomorrow, I’ll be thinking of them. Cyclo, jeffrey, leinie, Shez, PALady, EPU, Proud, Gari, Cait, Eva and a cast of thousands, you mean so much to me. Here’s to the best year yet for everyone, and here’s to all happiness.

p.s. Congratulations, Leinie and Mr. Leinie — here’s to a lifetime of joy!
Thanks Strat. Your sentiments mean alot. I know i feel the same. Hope you feel better soon.
BTW the pencil fell.

Eva, I’ll take some more drugs. If that doesn’t work, it’s hot toddy time, and you’re all invited. That bottle of Jameson’s won’t drink itself!
>BTW the pencil fell.<
You are the woman.

Thanks for such a wonderful compliment, Strat. One of the things I love about our chats is how they ebb and flow just as a real conversation would. From the serious to the mundane to the weird and ’round again. Like the pencil test convo. LOL
Happy Thanksgiving!
eva: Woot on failing the pencil test! My pencil gave me this look that said, “Uh, yeah. Which of these skeeter-bites am I supposed to be testing anyway??” LOL

Curses!!! Here I was hoping to leave a comment wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving – thinking that the gabbly folks would certainly see it – only to find you’ve beaten me to it. Great minds think alike, as my family would say. So, I’ll settle for “seconding” Strat’s thoughts and wishing you all a very happy holiday.
Gari
P.S. How funny that I wasn’t in on the ‘pencil test’ conversation, but I still know what you all are referring to. On the otherhand, I’m not sure it’s a good thing to admit I “pass”. LOL

[...] So, here’s part of my “Blessings” list – the idea for which I stole, in part, from Strategerie: [...]

Wishing you a very happy Thanksgiving Day, too, strategerie.
Glad that Gabbly has turned out to be a lovely little sub-community for FDL folks…I suspect that we will see some changes very soon that may even best Gabbly for our FDL friends’ use. Hoping for an even more gabbly year ahead.

Hey, Strat!
Long time no see any of you guys. I totally fell off of using Gabbly and didn’t realize you guys were all still over there. I’ve still been at FDL, but not posting as much — I followed a link from there to here.
I’ve gotten busy with Nancy Skinner’s campaign and between that and actual work at work, it’s hard to find time to do everything online I’d like to do.
Wishing a very happy Thanksgiving to all the Gabbly people — I’ll try to stop by again soon.
Sharon

Strat, I hope you had a fantastic Thanksgiving. I’m grateful for you guys, too. My gabbly buddies – I miss you guys when I don’t get in to chat with you, too.
The wedding was wonderful. Exactly what I wanted. A non-stressful day. I’ll have to send you some pics. Mr. L says thanks for the kind wishes.
Happy Thanksgiving to you all!

Happy Thanksgiving to you, our lovely, lively, Strategerie friend. You’ve captured perfectly what I’ve been very thankful for all year, to find the friends we have and care about the world together. Blessings to All.
